Heron

I've been stalking these birds all week, at least, with my camera and have many shots, and missed many shots.

In my neighborhood, I believe there are at least three of these guys hanging out for the summer. This one is often by the dam, and seems to be the bravest as there is quite a bit of vehicle and pedestrian traffic there. Another prefers the fire pond, but is much more skittish and easily spooked away. Yet another (?) flies from the brook up the valley nearly every night around 8:30 pm.

I guess practice and perseverance do pay off, if I had stopped trying to photograph this fellow, just because I had already captured it once - I would have missed the thrill of getting a fairly decent shot, I would have missed learning a bit about their habits, and would have missed the fun of driving around with my kids - who I'm happy to say, enjoy this kind of thing just as much as I do!

  1. Ooh! I love the picture. You know I'm intensely jealous of your little haven, right? We get birds like that around here, but not against such a lush backdrop. Gorgeous!

  2. Thanks Crystal! Yesterday the same bird flew alongside our car part of the way down the lake - it was SO cool, right beside us in flight for maybe 100 yds!!

Looking forward to your book debut :-) whoo hoo
